With the Australia Day long weekend now finished, following the awards ceremony, a free breakfast and the time capsule opening, the community is abuzz following the celebrations.
It was an ideal day for the celebrations, starting with a bright, sunny morning and progressing to a glorious summer day, even though the temperature reached a rather warm 35 degrees.
It didn’t deter those celebrating here in Deniliquin, with a packed Town Hall for the Australia Day ceremony, followed by a big crowd that converged on the Waring Gardens for the time capsule opening.
Heatwave hits
Deniliquin is a particularly hot place in the summer, and this year is no different.
Temperatures have consistently been well over the 30°C mark, which for most is a manageable temperature.
Yesterday was less manageable, as the mercury soared into the 40s, though not for the first time in recent weeks.
It will be a little more pleasant throughout this week, with low 30s expected before it creeps into the mid 30s on Friday, then the heat returns at the weekend when we’re tipped to have a 37°C on Saturday, then 40°C on Sunday.
When it gets that hot, the advice is to keep hydrated, stay indoors under cooling where possible and keep an eye on younger and older family members, as well as our furry friends.
Long weekend over
The long weekend has officially finished, and with it the double demerit points period.
During the Australia Day long weekend, NSW Police were ready for people holidaying in town prepared to do the wrong thing.
Deni attracts a lot of holiday goers, thanks in large part to the attraction of the Edward River.
While we had lots of visitors at the weekend it seemed most, if not all, behaved in the right manner.
Junior golf clinics
The Deniliquin Golf Club is offering junior golf clinics for local budding young golfers.
The club will be running a primary school aged clinic as well as a high school aged clinic, starting this Friday and continuing on the following Friday.
Primary school aged children will start their clinic at 9am, while the high school aged children will have their clinic kick-off at 10.30am.
The clinics will be running on Friday, January 31 and Friday, February 7 and will cost $10 per person for each session.
Back to school
With students across the state still enjoying the downtime and holidaying over the Christmas holidays, the end is in sight.
Students are scheduled to go back to school in early February, with most having a start date of Thursday, February 13.
This means the school children around Deniliquin will head to classes for the Thursday and Friday, then have the weekend off.
This will more than likely help out the newest students in their first year of primary or high school, giving them the opportunity to acclimatise to their new environments.
Library activities
The Edward River Library continue to provide local children with an opportunity to enjoy some holiday fun.
The library will be offering a number of activities near the end of the school holidays.
On Thursday, January 29 there will be library bag painting activity, followed by a UNO competition on Thursday, January 30 and a scavenger hunt on Monday, February 3.
For more details check out the library, or the Edward River Council website.
