Agriculture Victoria has addressed demands for an inquiry into local pig farms, following concerns raised by an animal welfare organisation.
On Tuesday, January 28, animal rights organisation Farm Transparency Project released footage from inside five pig farms in the Kyabram and district area.
The activists took photo and video footage over the January 18-19 weekend from inside the pig farms, capturing images of dead piglets and the inside of farrowing sheds.
Executive director of the activist group Chris Delforce claimed this footage revealed the “reality inside every farm that raises pigs for slaughter”.
On Wednesday, January 29, a spokesperson for Agriculture Victoria confirmed it had received an animal welfare report regarding five Victorian piggeries on that same day.
They said Agriculture Victoria took any report of a breach of animal welfare laws “very seriously”.
“These reports are being investigated as a matter of priority,” the spokesperson said.
“The report received is now being assessed to determine any further actions.”
Farm Transparency Project has said it would release footage from 15 more pig farms across the state “in the coming weeks”.
