Throughout the month, the Petstock Foundation is encouraging Australians to consider adopting rescue pets in need of a forever home.
Echuca Petstock manager Terril Westwood said adopting a pet could change lives.
“Unfortunately, thousands of pets enter the rescue cycle each year through no fault of their own,” she said.
“Adoption doesn’t just change the life of the animal, it enriches families and individuals’ lives.
“The event is also a great chance for people to learn more about pet adoption, fostering and to meet their local rescue group.”
There are currently 10,000 pets at shelters, rescue groups, pounds and vets across Australia awaiting adoption.
Contrary to popular belief, many of the pets seeking adoption are not always surrendered due to behavioural issues.
Factors such as the rising cost of living and rentals not being pet-friendly have also had a major impact on the number of pets being surrendered.
Since the creation of the Petstock Foundation in 2007, the organisation has found homes for more than 41,000 rescue pets.
Petstock stores across Australia, including Echuca, will be hosting a Pet Adoption weekend on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23.
Animals from the Campaspe Animal Shelter will be in store for people to take a look and to learn more about the process of adoption.
