A surge in respiratory illness, new staff and preparing for the introduction of a new patient service - it’s been quite a busy period for the Deniliquin Hospital.

In providing her manager’s update to the Deniliquin Local Health Advisory Committee’s July meeting, Deniliquin facility manager Ginny Lange said the emergency department has seen increased presentations as a result of the surge.
“The winter surge of COVID and influenza highlights the need for the entire community to keep their vaccinations up to date, and to be vigilant about staying home when you are unwell, practising hand hygiene, and using masks when you are around vulnerable people,” she said.
Mrs Lange also advised the hospital has welcomed another new nursing staff appointment in the last month, as part of MLHD’s overseas recruitment campaign.
This has been a very successful initiative, and results in reduced expense, more continuity of care, and less reliance on agency staff.
Deniliquin LHAC also continues to advocate for cardiac rehab services, and is hopeful this will be available to our community later this year.
At the same time, the committee is continuing with its health education programs in the community.
Deni LHAC chair Lynda Barclay said the Lifting Health Outcomes programme is continuing, with the fifth talk in this series held on July 3 and focussing on lung health.
“This was well attended, and was presented by Di Gardiner - a respiratory and heart failure clinical nurse specialist.
“We are very fortunate to have someone of Di’s calibre within our community.”
Mrs Barclay said LHAC also continues to collaborate with other community groups to improve awareness around local health services.
“Last week we attended the Koori Market, which was really well attended, and we also plan to attend Intereach’s Expo in August.
“We will also have resources to share regarding Women’s Health Week in September.
“Your free copy of the Health Services Information Guide is available at the front desk of the hospital, the Library, Community Health Centre, local pharmacies and doctor’s surgeries, amongst some other locations. This guide lists all things health in Deniliquin and is great to have on your desk at home.”
