Mr Taylor, 23, was found in the Murray River south of the Five Mile boat ramp by Victoria Police divers on Thursday morning, January 16, after being declared missing on the evening of January 14.
Since then, Echuca CFA, Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade, Echuca United Football Netball Club and Echuca South Cricket Club, plus many individuals, have expressed their condolences and reflected on the character of Nathan.
The 23-year-old was heavily involved with firefighting in Victoria, being a dedicated member of Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade and Echuca CFA’s competition side.
He was involved with Echuca CFA before switching to Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade in November 2023, but remained a competitor with Echuca as part of its 2024 NSW state championship-winning team.
“Nathan’s dedication to improve was admirable, with never wanting to give up, but nothing can top his infectious smile and laugh, being able to change the mood of anyone he came across,” Echuca CFA said in a Facebook post.
“Condolences to Nathan’s family, friends and anyone else who was fortunate enough to meet such an amazing young man.”
He also made history as Bamawm Extension’s very first participant in the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb in 2024 and placed in the top 10.
More than anything, Nathan is remembered by the two firefighting stations as having a positive attitude, joyous energy, willingness to learn and determination to succeed.
“We are heartbroken and in shock at the loss of such a bright and inspiring young man. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Kerrie, Craig, Lyndall and Luke, as well as his many friends and fellow firefighters,” Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade said in a Facebook post.
“His infectious positivity, boundless energy and unwavering dedication made him a valued part of our team.
“Nathan was always ready to lend a hand no matter what, no matter where, embodying the true spirit of CFA.
“Nathan’s legacy of kindness, dedication and joy will forever be remembered. Rest in peace, mate. You will be deeply missed.”
As well as giving back to his community through firefighting, Nathan was also heavily involved in local sport, playing senior football for Echuca United Football Club and cricket for Echuca South Cricket Club.
He is remembered as playing for the Swans in 2014, where he was coached by Gary Williams as a youngster.
“Nathan always gave his all and would put others first, which was still the Nathan we knew today,” Mr Williams said.
“Nathan was great kid and a great supporter of the club.”
He was a long-standing member of Echuca United Football Club, playing his junior and senior football with the Eagles.
He initially struggled to find a spot in his junior teams, particularly the under-14s, but with endless perseverance and his notoriously big heart, managed to secure a senior team debut in 2022 against Congupna.
“With deep sadness, we farewell one of the most genuine and kind-hearted individuals to ever walk through the doors of Echuca United Football Netball Club,” the club said in a Facebook post.
“Nathan’s warmth, kindness and unwavering spirit touched so many lives, and he will be greatly missed.
“Nathan’s memory will live on with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
