Gargarro Botanic Gardens in partnership with the Foundry Arts Space is offering $30,000 to an artist who can produce a large “impactful” 3D piece to be displayed in the gardens.
Judi Lawler with the Foundry Arts Space is at the helm of the project, helping to find a local and talented artist to be featured in the garden.
Ms Lawler emphasised that a successful entry will thoughtfully interpret the garden's vision or celebrate First Nations connections.
“The theme is either to reflect the garden and where it hopes to do in its future, or the First Nations connection,” Ms Lawler said.
“We’re trying to keep it as open as possible as an artist can interpret how they wish, rather than being too selective.”
Ms Lawler welcomed expressions of interest from all artists, with a special encouragement for First Nations individuals to explore the theme.
“We encourage anyone to put an expression of interest in, particularly First Nations people because that would tie in just beautifully with the theme.”
Expressions of interest are open from March 1 to mid-April, after which a shortlist of candidates will be compiled.
The short list of artists will be given $600 to fund a draft or mock-up of what art piece they want to create for the gardens.
By June 1, the artist will be announced, and they will have until the end of November to create the piece.
In June 2024, it was announced Gargarro Botanic Gardens were successful in receiving a $30,000 grant through the Tiny Towns Fund, along with 11 other community run organisations.
