The new, state-of-the-art station, jointly run by Fire Rescue Victoria and CFA, was to be handed over to fire services on January 13 for a final fit-out and communications to be installed.
But a joint statement by South, East and Central FRV operations acting deputy commissioner Costa Katsikis and CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan confirmed the fire station had only become operational on June 24.
Accommodating 60 FRV firefighters across four rotating shifts and 40 CFA volunteers around the clock, the much-anticipated opening signals a permanent move from the "outdated" Maude St station.
“Victorian firefighters have a long and proud history of working as one and FRV and CFA continue to work seamlessly to protect lives and properties across the state,” the statement said.
The new station’s design includes turnout facilities, office space, a kitchen, living quarters, a multi-purpose room, a workshop, onsite parking and an external skills training area — providing 24/7 emergency coverage of Shepparton and its surrounding communities.
“The new Shepparton Fire Station is a co-located facility that accommodates both career and volunteer firefighters,” the statement said.
“The new station has room for five appliances and support vehicles, meaning FRV and CFA’s service delivery has additional capacity for surge events such as bushfires and the ability to scale up to meet the growing needs of the Shepparton community.
“CFA and FRV continue to work together to provide the best service to all Victorians — and the new co-located Shepparton Fire Station will see that tradition continue for years to come.”
A spokesperson said a formal opening would happen in August, depending on COVID-19 restrictions.
