It will be introduced to the community on Friday, March 19, and open for business from Wednesday, March 24.
The Rushworth food bank will be operated by Rushworth Community House and serve the south end of the Campaspe Shire, including Colbinabbin, Toolleen and Stanhope; covering a population of more than 2500 people.
Campaspe Shire Council will fund its first 12 months of operation.
Rushworth Community House manager Anita Pirie said the food bank was brought about due to the council identifying the need for it.
“They were quoting one in four people (from the identified area) were in some need of support,” she said.
“We're concerned that with COVID and JobKeeper ending at the end of March that there will be more people.
“It's a support for the community. There's a need for the community . . . we will continue past 12 months if that's required.”
Mrs Pirie said the food available would be non-perishable items, and there would be hygiene products available as well.
On Wednesday about 300 kg of food was delivered.
Mrs Pirie said the details of those using the food bank would remain confidential, while volunteers would make the service comfortable for users.
“Because we're not sure what the need will be initially, we're urging people to contact us (Rushworth Community House) first; so, by appointment only,” she said.
“Don't be afraid to come forward; there is no judgement. There is access through the back door and it's quite private."
Campaspe Shire Council community programs officer Ben Hearn said there were a "multitude of reasons" the food bank was established.
He said the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was one reason.
“In time there will be the ability to refer people to other services,” he said.
“It's not a one-stop-shop . . . if they're seeking other assistance we can help provide that to them.
“Often people don't know where to go to get different levels of help, so this is another venue that can serve as an addition to the community house."
Mr Hearn said most communities in Campaspe Shire already had a food share program.
He said the new one in Rushworth was strengthening the council's footprint.
The Rushworth food bank is supported by Shepparton FoodShare, Bendigo FoodShare, Bendigo Bank, GV Health and Rushworth P-12 College.
The Rushworth food bank will be open from 9 am until 12 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays.
