Gowrie St Primary School wellbeing leader Bron Huggard said it was the first time the school had adopted the program.
“We’ve been having a big focus on supporting our children to seize life’s opportunities through learning, and this is all a part of that,” she said.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for our kids to learn to look after themselves, their friends and their loved ones.
“We all find ourselves in a point of emergency at some point in our lives, so educating our kids about that as early as possible is a good thing.”
Younger students learned how to identify emergency situations, keep themselves safe and call for an ambulance, whereas the Year 5s and 6s are being taught CPR basics.
Year 5 student Gemma Tripoli said she would remember CPR skills forever, and it had been a fun task.
“We’ve been taught what to do if someone’s unconscious, and I’m learning lots,” she said.
“It’s very fun and very important, just in case we do find somebody unconscious.”
St John’s Ambulance Victoria presenter Rebecca Smith said the program had been going for around six years, and last year, the organisation trained over 100 000 children.
