After running a number of sessions in the area, the Melbourne-based not-for-profit has recently opened a space on Wyndham St, Shepparton.
Creating a safe space for men of all ages to share their struggles, Dardi Munwurro provides men’s healing and behavioural change programs aiming to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to become leaders, role models and mentors within their communities.
Dardi Munwurro Hume regional co-ordinator Josh Simm took part in the program a few years ago after struggling with drugs and alcohol.
“I was really lost and broken; I just felt I was very disconnected from my culture,” he said.
Mr Simm said the program helped get his life back on track, helping him to learn more about himself, rather than the negative male stereotypes he was portraying.
“I got to know who I really was, not who I thought I was,” he said.
Set for a second Shepparton session yesterday morning, Mr Simm was joined by Dardi Munwurro director Alan Thorpe, community development worker Rupert Betheras and Madec indigenous support co-ordinator Eric Egan.
Mr Thorpe said the programs run by Dardi Munwurro provided a safe place for men to receive support in a relaxed and uncomplicated way.
Connected with the Collingwood Football Club, Melbourne Storm and a number of indigenous support services, he said the organisation helped keep men out of trouble by instilling values of camaraderie and mateship.
“During the sessions, we think of our families and think about how we can support them,” Mr Thorpe said.
“We think about the bigger picture stuff and things that are bigger than ourselves.
“You can’t underestimate the power you have to make a difference in your family.”
Mr Thorpe said strengthening leadership qualities within the men would help create a ripple effect within the community.
He said he was positive about the impact the program could make in the area.
“You feel proud when you walk in here,” he said.
“The space feels good, it’s a safe place, it’s a good room and it’s for the men.”
With about 10 men involved in the Shepparton program, Mr Simm is looking forward to expanding the number of participants and offering a more opportunities for those involved.
