Victorian Aboriginal communities will elect assembly members in September and October to decide which Victorian Traditional Owners take up 21 of the 33 Assembly seats in the assembly.
The other 12 seats are designated for each of the 12 formally recognised traditional owner groups.Enrolment and candidate nominations are now open.
The north-east region has three seats, with four candidates currently having nominated as of July 29.
Treaty Advancement Commissioner Jill Gallagher encouraged Aboriginal people to take part.
“For the first time since colonisation we have a government that is willing to talk treaty,” Ms Gallagher said.
“If any community members want a conversation to find out more about becoming a candidate, or want to talk treaty, please get in touch,” she said.
The commission and Shepparton-based community organisation Aldara Yenara invite Aboriginal community members to a treaty conversation in Shepparton this Thursday to encourage participation in the election.
The conversation will take place from 10am to 3pm at the Parklake Hotel, 481 Wyndham St, Shepparton.
