Pilot escapes injury as light plane flips on roof

Nine emergency vehicles including police and paramedics responded to the crash, which was reported just before 4pm.

Flight records show the Cessna 172 aircraft took off from Bacchus Marsh Airport about 20 minutes before it crash landed at Essendon at 3.46pm.

The aircraft appeared to skid off the runway after it touched down at the airport, prompting it to flip, Nine News reported.

The pilot and sole occupant of the plane was checked over by paramedics but cleared of any injuries, a police spokeswoman said.

Fire crews were working to isolate any potential fuel leak before the scene could be declared safe.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau was notified of the crash, a spokeswoman said. 

The bureau was gathering further information about the incident to determine whether to investigate.
