PNG prime minister James Marape and Mr Albanese will watch the Prime Minister's XIII rugby league clashes at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday.
The rugby league matches are an international fixture between the two countries, with this year's men's and women's matches being the first held in Australia.
The men's match has not been held for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Albanese said sport such as rugby league had formed a key part of the relationship between the two nations.
"Australia's relationship with Papua New Guinea is special and unique; we hold common history, values, and an enduring bond as neighbours, partners and friends," he said.
"We also share a vision of what we want to achieve together - a more prosperous, unified and secure region."
The prime minister said he would look to work closely with Papua New Guinea on economic recovery, infrastructure, climate resilience, security as well as sport.
The Prime Minister's XIII has been held since 2005, with matches mostly being played annually in Port Moresby as well as other parts of Papua New Guinea.
