The head of Brisbane firm Endua said the renewable energy source needs greater industry support, after showing off the company's hydrogen generation and storage technology at Archerfield Airport on Tuesday.
The demonstration comes amid heated debate over Australia's energy future before the next federal election and after a CSIRO report into the industry found it had the potential to generate $1.7 billion and create almost 4000 jobs by 2050.
Endua, which is backed by firms including Ampol, deployed two hydrogen technologies to the airport: an electrolyser to generate renewable hydrogen on site, and a power bank storage solution housed in a metal container.
The "plug-and-play" modular system was moved to the site, constructed and working within six hours, Endua chief executive Paul Sernia told AAP.
He's hoping it will prove to companies that hydrogen is more accessible than many think.
"There are a lot of hurdles in the supply chain around transportation, the generation of hydrogen, the costs associated with (it)," he said.
"Those are that kinds of barriers that are stopping a lot of these projects from going ahead and we're here to try to make that easier and solve those problems."
Generating hydrogen where it was needed would address issues with its transport, Mr Sernia said.
He hopes green hydrogen produced through the equipment will be used to fuel future planes or help in the production of sustainable aviation fuel.
Renewable hydrogen also had potential to be used in heavy vehicle transport, mining, and to power remote infrastructure in Australia, but companies needed to take a chance on the technology, he said.
"There's a lot of discussions about hydrogen but I don't think it's something people really understand (in terms of) how exactly it can be used (and) that goes for industry, not just general discourse," Mr Sernia said.
"The potential is immense but if we can showcase our products, how they operate, the fact that they're ready, and put it in an environment that shows this is how it can work ... then we can start to open those conversations."
The hydrogen technology deployed in Brisbane would be used to "facilitate the next aviation evolution" and fuel cleaner transport options, Archerfield Airport joint managing director Lachlan Bird said.
In December, the CSIRO released a report into hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing and found the sector had the potential to generate $1.7 billion in revenue by 2050, and create almost 4000 jobs.
Installing the hydrogen-generating technology could also create another 1000 jobs by 2050, the report found, and $1.2 billion.
