Six in 10 Australians throw away up to a quarter of their groceries, which costs a family about $2000 per year in wasted food.
Nearly 40 per cent of food wasted is fruit and vegetables.
MasterChef finalist Simon Toohey thinks that pears hold the answer to this waste and so has provided a range of recipes to address consumers’ ‘pear-anoia’.
Peak body Australian Pears has partnered with Mr Toohey to showcase his tips and tricks for maximising consumers’ produce.
According to Australian Pears, nearly half of consumers lack confidence in how to cook with pears.
Mr Toohey said the secret to avoiding wastage was to shop ‘strategically’ and to buy produce that could be used for a range of dishes.
“Buying seasonal produce is a great way to keep costs down, but what’s more important is that we’re buying seasonal produce that can be used in multiple dishes, not just one,” he said.
“Being strategic when shopping makes it much easier when needing to throw a last-minute meal together using what’s left from the weekly shop.”
Mr Toohey said pears were currently the most versatile and affordable fruit in season.
"Pears are my go-to autumn favourite, whether enjoyed as a satisfying snack or incorporated into a delicious dish, pears offer a fantastic option at any stage of ripeness.
“I always beeline to produce that can be used for a range of dishes — from hot to cold, savoury to sweet, and breakfast to dinner.
“And firm pears shine in salads or can be gently warmed for breakfast or dessert, while softer pears excel in baking.”
Mr Toohey has crafted five new recipes he hopes consumers will try, to use pears at every stage of their ripening.
Apple and Pear Australia Ltd newly appointed board director for Victoria Mitch McNab said customers needed to consider how pears were marketed by the larger supermarkets.
“I think from our consumers’ point of view, they need to take into account that traditionally, pears are sold to be ripened at home to the consumers’ preferred choice of ripeness,” Mr McNab said.
“How to best do that?
“I suggest they look at these recipes and work out which category they want and also picking the right pear for the right recipe.”
