Co-captain Nathan Marrone, midfielder Doug Wren, ruckman Andy Henderson and key forwards Will Hamilton and James McPhee were all missing from the side that took on Shepparton in round four.
So who has stepped up in their absence?
With the backline under duress to start the season, Hamish Hooppell and Matt Kellett have both been consistent inside the defensive arc for the Tigers.
Hooppell collected 12 touches playing as the full-back against Shepparton, showing poise to dispose of the ball at 91 per cent efficiency. He also cleared the ball out of defence well, recording six rebound-50s, while claiming two intercept marks and two contested marks.
Hooppell was the second-highest-rated player on the ground for Rochester behind hard-nut Joe Atley, adding five tackles and five clearances to his complete performance.
Matt Kellett was also outstanding in the backline, holding the Bears’ main target inside 50 Anthony Andronaco goalless for the first time this season.
His impact was far more significant than the stats would suggest, as he collected just three disposals and failed to register a mark, although he did record two score involvements.
Reid Gordon played as a makeshift key forward, recording 17 touches, 15 of which were contested, kicking two goals in the loss. He displayed strong hands, as three of his four marks were contested, while also applying two tackles.
Rochester will require more players to stand up in the absence of the senior pillars this week if they are to record their first win over an improved Tatura, although key forward Hamilton is returning from overseas and is still a chance to take the field.
