“When I left high school, I was sort of lost for a while,” Paul said.
“Then, at the age of 25, I was doing a lot of local music theatre shows, so I did a Bachelor of Music Theatre in Ballarat.
“Then I went back to working in an office for about five years.
“I joined a Robbie Williams tribute show and I remember doing our work Christmas break-up party and I mentioned that I did a show at work.
“My boss saw me, and the next week said, ‘I think you should resign’.
“And I’m thinking what do you mean? and he said, ‘You are wasting your time here. You work hard, but you should be performing’.
“And so, from age 35 to now, I’ve been performing full-time.”
Robbie Williams is not the only persona Paul has, also performing Beach Boys, Frankie Valli, and Michael Bublé shows.
“Funnily enough, I didn’t know too much about Robbie Williams in my late 20s, when he was really big back in 2001, 2002,” Paul said.
“I was at uni, and when I sang swing songs, somebody said, ‘You sound like Robbie Williams’.
“And I’m like, ‘Who is Robbie Williams?’”
“I did a bit of research, and there was a tribute band looking for another singer to do Robbie Williams, and I auditioned and got the part.
“From then on, I thank the real Robbie Williams because he actually gave me a lot of confidence to get up and perform.”
Paul likes singing many of Robbie Williams’ lesser-known numbers and his ballads.
“I love singing Go Gentle,” Paul said.
“It is a great song, but it sort of never got anywhere.
“I sing No Regrets, that’s a little bit more well-known.
“Robbie does so many ballads that I can’t throw in every single ballad in a row when you want to get people up on the dance floor.”
At The Australian Robbie Williams Show, expect to be entertained with swooning, singing and dancing with the crowd fully involved.
