In the heart of Shepparton, nestled on Wyndham St, a vibrant café restaurant named Barca Love stands out not just for its unique name but for the story, flavours and atmosphere that define it.
At first glance, it might seem like a regular café with its familial warmth and lively buzz.
But step inside, and you’ll find an unexpected twist — a celebration of smoked American and Cuban meats infused with the heart and soul of Italian traditions.
Phil and Tina, the passionate duo behind Barca Love, carry a rich Italian heritage that deeply influences their work.
They embody the essence of Italian culture, celebrating family, hospitality and the joy of gathering over great food.
These traditions are the cornerstone of Barca Love.
However, Phil’s culinary curiosity always pushed him to explore beyond his roots.
That curiosity grew when he took a trip to America.
Phil had always had an interest in smoked and barbecue meat, and while travelling in America he was able to try many and varied smoke houses and barbecue restaurants and was really inspired by this type of cuisine.
Phil discovered more than just the art of smoked meats.
He was captivated by the slow, deliberate process, the rich, smoky flavours, and the way food brought people together — which he knew well from his own upbringing.
By the end of his journey, he wasn’t just inspired; he was determined to bring this experience back home.
Returning to Shepparton, Phil shared his vision with his wife, Tina. Phil’s enthusiasm was infectious, and Tina, ever the adventurous spirit, decided to give it a shot.
Together, they transformed their dream into Barca Love, a name that paid homage to their Italian roots and their surnames combined — Barca and Loverso — while embracing their newfound passion.
True to the essence of Italian families, Barca Love became a family affair.
Their son Alex, working in front of house and ensuring every guest felt like part of the family, and daughter Ivie, now doing her apprenticeship in the kitchen and continuing the love of the American Cuban barbecue smoked meat tradition.
The family have a great team around them.
Word spread quickly, and Barca Love became a local sensation.
It wasn’t just the food that drew people but the experience.
Diners raved about the warm welcome, the laughter echoing through the restaurant and the feeling of being part of something special.
Phil and Tina’s passion was palpable, and it was clear that every dish was made with love.
The restaurant’s interior channels the spirit of Old Havana, with vibrant colours, vintage posters and music filling the air.
The staff are attentive, welcoming and knowledgeable.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, starting with the most incredible slow-cooked, American-style smoked ribs we shared as a starter.
The crispy chicken salad was rich and full of flavour, and the classic Po' Boy beef burger was a standout.
Paul couldn’t stop raving about the chips, calling them the best he had ever had.
The vibe was fantastic, the food was exceptional and we’re thrilled about the mixture of cuisines now available locally!
For Shepparton locals and visitors alike, Barca Love offers more than just a meal.
It’s a testament to the beauty of blending traditions, embracing new experiences and cherishing family bonds.
As we savoured their smoked meats and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere, it was easy to see why their food — and their story — is so loved.
The experience was great. As we left, we couldn’t help but smile, knowing we’d be back for more.
