Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a complete beginner, there’s a place for you on the crew – and they’re especially encouraging women to get involved.
Established in 2012 by Roy Hill, Shepparton Sailability is a local not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers, operating on Tuesdays and Thursdays during terms 1 and 4. It’s dedicated to providing individuals with disabilities - as well as various cultural and Indigenous groups, financially and socially disadvantaged communities, schools, clubs, and individuals - the opportunity to either take the helm or enjoy a peaceful free ride across the water, fostering independence and a sense of adventure.
“What better fun to have than sailing two days a week,” Shepparton Sailability president Roy Hill said.
Volunteering with Sailability isn’t just about helping others – it’s also a rewarding experience for you. You’ll learn new skills, make new friends, and spend time outdoors on Victoria Park Lake. It’s the perfect way to enjoy nature, build connections, and feel good about giving back.
“The thing that I really enjoy is the opportunity because we're in a boat,” Mr Hill said.
“We're out there and quite often just chatting away.
“And it's a great opportunity to chat, you know, with a disabled person or person from another culture.
“It's (a) two-way thing that it's good for them, it's good for us.
“It's not hard work, you know, it's, yeah, good, fun, social.”
Shepparton Sailability’s volunteer crew is mostly men, but they’re eager to diversify and welcome more women to the team. Sailing is for everyone, and they believe in creating a balanced, inclusive crew where all volunteers feel valued. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to try something new, meet like-minded people, and make a real difference in the community.
“A lot of volunteers come down here and say ‘this has been really great for my life, I've got a purpose’,” Mr Hill said.
“I'm doing something.
“I'm enjoying it.
“I've learned how to sail.”
So, if you’ve been looking for a meaningful way to give back or try something different, now’s the perfect time to get involved.
Whether you're an experienced sailor or a complete novice, everyone is welcome at Shepparton Sailability. No prior sailing experience is needed – the team will provide all the training and support you need to get started.
Want to volunteer but not a fan of sailing? Shepparton Sailability is also looking for volunteers to assist in various roles, including instructing, pontoon hands, recovery boat crew, yacht rigging, volunteer coordination, rostering, bookings, publicity and promotions, fundraising, and organising social activities.
If you’re ready to try something new, meet great people, and make a real difference, Shepparton Sailability would love to welcome you aboard.
There’s a Come-and-Try session happening on October 10 from 11am to 1pm at Victoria Park Lake. It’s the perfect chance to see what it’s all about – so don’t be shy, come down and meet the team.
