The Tallygaroopna and District Historical Society Inc was incorporated this month, following the election of the committee of management, representing local families.
The purpose of the Tallygaroopna and District Historical Society Inc is to collect, collate, record, preserve, restore and display items of historical importance to the local community.
Historical information will be researched, interpreted, documented and made available for interest and educational purposes, to help current and future generations understand their heritage.
The society will encourage membership from all members of the community within the district.
The first major project identified by the committee was to assist the Tallygaroopna Soldiers’ Memorial Hall committee to compile information, photographs, family and community stories and memorabilia relating to the hall.
The hall’s centenary is to be celebrated in June 2024, and the society is preparing historical memorabilia to include in the celebrations.
The hall committee plans to compile a hall history book to commemorate the hall as a war memorial.
Committee members also wish to celebrate the community by including local history from families, community groups, schools, religious organisations and sporting clubs that have had many and varied functions at the hall.
The hall was officially opened on the King’s Birthday weekend in June 1924, as a memorial to the Tallygaroopna and district men and women who served in World War I.
The committee currently consists of president Trish Moss, vice-president John Rhodes, secretary Bev Guest-Smith, treasurer Lyn Hoffman and membership secretary Glenda Dempster, all of whom have a personal connection to the hall and town.
If you would like to contribute stories or photographs relating to the hall, please contact Ms Guest-Smith on 0492 289 831, or email her at bevgsoz@gmail.com
People wishing to become a member of this local history group are invited to attend the information session or contact Ms Moss on 0427 298 288.
