Building on the success of last year’s initiative, council is calling on locals to don their pointy ears and jingle bells to become Christmas elves.
“Last year was our first year, and we really wanted to create some atmosphere and cheer leading into Christmas. So we recruited locals to be elves,” council partnerships and marketing co-ordinator Liz Connick said.
The initiative received tremendous community support.
“We got lots of positive feedback — a lot of people gained new skills and grew in confidence. So we are building on this concept and recruiting,” Mrs Connick said.
The Christmas Wonderland, set to open on December 1 in the Shepparton CBD, will serve as the home base for the elves.
“There’ll be free kids’ activities and face painting,” Mrs Connick said.
“The elves also normally visit the businesses that are participating in the campaign, and they wander the streets spreading Christmas cheer and having lots of fun — sometimes they (also) get up to a little bit of mischief.”
Wondering who could join the ranks of Shepparton’s merry band of elves?
“A local who is passionate about Christmas, spreading cheer and having some fun can apply. Applications are open now,” Mrs Connick said.
“Last year, we had 25 Christmas elves, and they ranged in age from 14 to 55.”
She also said the initiative wasn’t just about painting the town red and green; it was also about community interaction and improving the city’s morale.
“We did receive amazing feedback from the community. People were emailing us and thanking us for putting a smile on their faces,” Mrs Connick said.
And, if you’re keen to capture the moment on camera, the elves are up for that as well.
“They’re great to talk to and helpful for Christmas ideas. The elves are also very happy to take the Elfie Selfie,” she said.
Applications close on November 9.
