Since its inception as a not-for-profit organisation in October, 2022, the Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community has been dedicated to uniting residents of Nepalese origin and preserving their cultural heritage within the local area.
Our Community has hosted the Teej Festival for the second year after its successful celebration last year at GV Hotel. The community has been actively participating in local community events in this region, such as the St George’s Rd food festival, Converge Festival, etc, by performing and showcasing Nepali traditional dance and costumes.
Shepparton has been an attractive settlement destination for people of Nepalese origin from urban cities with a lot of employment opportunities and a good environment.
Our committed team of volunteers works tirelessly to connect Australian-born children with their cultural roots and to celebrate major Nepalese festivals.
The Teej Festival, a significant Hindu celebration observed by women throughout Nepal, was the highlight of this event. Women dressed in red sarees and adorned with tika performed traditional folk songs and dances.
The festival holds particular significance for married women, who return to their maternal homes to celebrate with feasting and joyous activities. It was truly inspiring to witness women of all ages dancing for hours in the spirit of this cherished tradition.
This year’s Teej Festival attracted more than 200 attendees and received enthusiastic support from the local community. Held from 5pm to 10pm, the event was a vivid display of cultural pride and community spirit.
The celebration featured performances by popular Nepal artists Pashupati Sharma and Devi Gharti, and traditional Nepalese cuisine was served, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Cr Anthony Brophy, representing the Greater Shepparton City Council, attend the event.
In his speech, he expressed appreciation for the celebration and emphasised the council’s commitment to supporting multicultural communities. He also commended the event’s hospitality and cultural significance, noting the council’s dedication to fostering a vibrant and diverse Shepparton.
The success of this event is a testament to the hard work of our event co-ordinator, Bhesh Baral, and his team of dedicated volunteers. Their efforts ensured a memorable and joyous occasion for all.
— Bishal Jung Kunwar, Secretary of the Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community.
