That’s where the PAWS Program steps in, offering eligible residents a chance to have their cats de-sexed, microchipped and registered for just $20.
Greater Shepparton City Council, in partnership with the local Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, launched the PAWS program in mid-2024 to make responsible pet ownership more accessible.
Now, the program is expanding to assist 40 eligible residents in providing necessary care for their feline friends.
Applications are open until Monday, March 31, and to be eligible, applicants must:
• Hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card.
• Live within Greater Shepparton, with priority given to those in public housing or caravan parks.
• Be 18 years or older.
• Own a cat that needs de-sexing, microchipping and registration.
• Be able to transport their cat to and from the participating veterinary clinic.
Successful applicants will be required to pay the $20 fee before scheduling their cat’s procedure, which will take place in April or May.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali encouraged residents to apply and share the initiative with those who may benefit from it.
“The Greater Shepparton Animal Shelter is constantly at capacity, with cats and kittens in need of homes,” he said.
“The PAWS program is a fantastic initiative that helps prevent unwanted litters while supporting vulnerable community members to provide the best care for their pets.
“There are only 40 places available in this program, so we encourage eligible residents to apply and spread the word to those who may need this assistance.”
If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, applications can be submitted online at shepp.city/pawsprogram before March 31.
