A group of Benalla-based volunteers have been assisted by several local businesses to arrange for 48 boxes of books to be sent to schools across Papua New Guinea.
Benalla’s Bill Sykes said the support of local businesses had been invaluable in allowing the successful program to continue.
“The books are trucked to Melbourne by Cannys Wangarratta and then shipped to Port Moresby,” Dr Sykes said.
“Distribution in PNG is challenging and is done through Buk Bilong Pikinini who have distributed over one million books over the last decade.
“The gratitude of the villagers when they receive the books is overwhelming
“I tear up every time I see a photo of the grateful villagers and a box of books
“This small gift will help the descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, who did so much for our soldiers on the Kokoda Track in World War II, learn English and emerge from poverty.
“This is a great program, which was initiated by Brian Bial, to compliment his scholarship program.
“That program has helped more than 50 young people, predominantly women, complete their secondary school education and go onto tertiary education.”
Dr Sykes said Treasure Hunters Benalla provided the boxes the books were shipped in.
“Three locals, Robyn, Geraldine and Katrina help sort and pack the books,” he said.
“Neil from AGF seeds, formerly Smyth Seeds, stacked the boxes on the pallet and wrapped them.
“The books are supplied by several retired school teachers, Vinnies, Salvos, Red Cross, the Baptist Church and several other kind individuals.
“Thank you Benalla for helping.”
