New Victorian Water Minister Harriet Shing visited one of the $177 million project’s sites at Hawkers Rd, Waaia, on Tuesday, July 19 to witness the progress. The project has already achieved 8 Gl of water savings.
She congratulated the project managers and contractors on the progress on the project, which is funded by the Federal Government and is intended to improve water access and reliability for about 1000 customers.
The Hawkers Rd site will see 7km of open channel replaced by five pumps and pipes, and the number of farm outlets almost halved.
Project managers say the improved service efficiency should allow irrigators to get access to water deliveries within 24 hours, instead of multiple days.
The Water Efficiency Project will ultimately decommission about 60km of channels, which will be replaced by about 24km of pipes.
The upgrades are similar to the work carried out by the previous $2 billion Connections project.
