Former Melbourne tall Weideman, who kicked two goals on his Bombers debut in the round-one thumping of Hawthorn, was named in the initial squad for Sunday's encounter at Marvel Stadium.
But he was a late withdrawal, replaced by Massimo D'Ambrosio in the team with Matt Guelfi coming in as the Bombers' substitute.
Essendon are already missing leading goal-kicker Peter Wright (shoulder) in attack and overlooked Jake Stringer (hamstring) after his interrupted build-up.
Gold Coast have regained speedster Lachie Weller after 10 months out with a knee injury and Malcolm Rosas has been recalled.
