The match between GWS and Richmond at Blacktown International Sportpark in Sydney's west was slated to start at 1.05pm on Saturday but was delayed by 30 minutes after a red-bellied black snake was spotted on the ground.
"It's pretty interesting," Giants head of women's football Briana Harvey told Fox Footy during the delay.
"There's a little red-bellied black snake ... just in one of the far pockets.
"Obviously for the safety of everyone here, we need to halt the game for a moment."
A snake catcher arrived soon at the ground to allow play to start.
Starting the season 0-2, the Giants were desperate for a win to keep their season alive.
