World No.11 and 10th seed Alex de Minaur took just 86 minutes to see off China's Bu Yunchaokete 6-4 6-4.
De Minaur left in late in both sets to do the damage, breaking in the 10th games of each.
Awaiting the 26-year-old is Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca, who scored a 6-4 6-3 win over Frenchman Ugo Humbert.
It will be a first meeting between de Minaur and Fonseca, who reached the third round at an ATP Masters 1000 for the first time in his fledgling career, and is the youngest player to do so since Carlos Alcaraz in Paris in 2021.
"I started the match today super relaxed, with no nerves," Fonseca said.
"That was good, I served well. I had a quick break, he was maybe a little bit more nervous in the beginning, but I started well and that's what made the difference."
Jordan Thompson and Adam Walton also progressed in two sets, Thompson enjoying a gritty 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-1) win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France while Walton triumphed 6-4 6-4 against Italy's Luciano Darderi.
Alexei Popyrin was the only Aussie beaten on Saturday, going down 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 7-5 to Russian Roman Safiullin.
Alexander Zverev has Thompson in his sights after downing British qualifier Jacob Fearnley 6-2 6-4.
"Happy to kind of have improved a few things from Indian Wells where I didn't feel well on the court. I didn't feel like I played good," Zverev told reporters.
"Hopefully this is just the first of many matches for me here and I can continue playing well."
Indian Wells champion Jack Draper crashed out, the sixth seed and British No.1 fell 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) to Czech Jakub Mensik.
And in another upset, Hong Kong wildcard Coleman Wong stunned 13th seed Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 7-6 (7-5) to advance, while Canada's Denis Shapovalov and American third seed Taylor Fritz also won and will meet in the third round.
Wong was emotional after his win.
"I always trust myself to play in these big stages," he said.
"I had a tough time during the (COVID) times ... I didn't play for a year and a half and I'm really lucky my team keeps supporting me.
"I'm really happy. This is for you Hong Kong."
