And midfielder Frans Deli is relishing the opportunity to help Australia get there - even if it means knocking his birth country out in the process.
The Young Socceroos are on the cusp of ending a 12-year wait to qualify for the under-20 World Cup, a tournament rated as one of the biggest shop windows for rising players.
Trevor Morgan's side have breezed through the group stages of the Asian Cup in China, which doubles as a World Cup qualification tournament, with three wins from three games.
But to book their place in Chile, they must overcome Iraq in a quarter-final match on Saturday (10.30pm AEDT) which carries special significance for Deli.
The Macarthur midfielder, who was born in Baghdad, is frequently asked on social media if he'll ever switch allegiance to Iraq.
"It's an emotional one for me," the 19-year-old told AAP.
"I was born in Iraq in 2005 and when I was 11 months my family moved over to Lebanon for a safer living.
"I came over to Australia in 2008 when I was three, and I've been playing football ever since then.
"I get heaps of messages (from Iraqi fans) of love and support and I'm really excited for that game.
"My parents are obviously very happy and proud of me and I'm grateful to wear this (Australian) jersey. We'll see who they support."
Deli is not just satisfied with reaching the semi-finals and booking a World Cup spot.
"It's been our goal, we said it from day one - we're not here to qualify, we're here to win the whole tournament," he said.
"It (a World Cup) would be an unreal experience and it's great exposure for the boys."
Deli has enjoyed cameos at Macarthur in the A-League Men this season but is keen to use the experience of an under-20 Asian Cup and a potential under-20 World Cup as a stepping stone to becoming a regular first-teamer.
"Luke Brattan coming into the club this year has definitely helped me. He has been a role model for me," Deli said.
"I just always try to do my best and help the team. I just want to give 100 per cent wherever I can."
