The 23-year-old Queensland enforcer has not played since round five last year when he sustained nerve damage to his left shoulder.
Flegler was forced to have nerve transfer surgery and the progress, while incremental, has been positive.
The rugged forward spoke for the first time about his inspirational fight to return to the NRL on 'The Inside Ball' podcast with broadcaster Ben Dobbin and his former Broncos coach Kevin Walters.
Flegler, who has played 100 NRL games and represented the Maroons and Australia, said that while he was unsure on the exact date of his return he would again rampage on an NRL field.
"I will definitely come back," he said.
"Everything is unknown to the point where I don't know when I am going to be back. I'll be back next year. I could be back this year.
" It is just taking it month by month."
Flegler waited five months after the injury before it was clear the nerve was not going to heal naturally.
"Once you have the nerve transplant that is last resort. Sometimes it can come back naturally. We tried that and unfortunately it didn't so I had a nerve transplant," he said.
"They went down to my tricep, pulled a nerve up to my deltoid and sewed it together. It has started to heal."When you do a shoulder reco or ACL you know it is a six or ninth month (recovery) and you can see a progression the whole way. With nerve damage the progression is very minimal and very slow.
"I do have strength. It is getting better. I am seeing the strength come back and it is starting to improve but it is very small steps. If you saw me train you would have no idea I am injured."
Flegler is active at each Dolphins training session and his mindset has been a huge boost to his teammates.
As a fiery red head from North Queensland who lives for the collision, sometimes he can't bare to watch the NRL on the couch."Sometimes I just don't watch the game, especially if we are going through a tough time. I get that angry I want to throw a remote at the TV," he chuckled.
Flegler said the injury had prevented him from building muscle but he has taken heart from watching a four-time premiership-winning Penrith prop.
"The only player that has got a similar injury to this is Moses Leota who wears a big pad on his shoulders," he said.Flegler may do the same when he gets back on the park, which he most assuredly will."If I didn't come back this year I would definitely be back for round one next year," he said.
