Tabuai-Fidow, known as 'Hammer', missed last week's 24-23 loss to Wests Tigers with a head knock but on Tuesday trained at No.1 ahead of Friday night's clash with the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium.
The Dolphins have ditched the experiment of playing the Queensland star at centre and have moved him back to his favourite position.
Tabuai-Fidow started at fullback last year for North Queensland, got injured and lost his position to Drinkwater.
Both players have been electric this season and have had a major influence on wins for their sides. Tabuai-Fidow has scored 15 tries and Drinkwater has 10, plus 24 try assists.
The Cowboys are ninth on 28 points and must win against the 14th-placed Dolphins and Penrith (away) to play in the finals series.
Injuries forced Tabuai-Fidow to switch to centre for three games this year. He was happy to do it for the team but the Dolphins get the best out of him at No.1.
"I'm excited to be back there. I have played centre but fullback is the number one position I prefer," he said.
"I am just grateful for the opportunity to come here and play the position I like. I think I have excelled heaps and learned a lot off the boys, especially Wayne (Bennett)."
Tabuai-Fidow has no hard feelings about Drinkwater claiming the No.1 jersey in Townsville. He said the Dolphins move was the best thing for him after he learned plenty from Drinkwater.
"The way he attacks and his vision, I tried to pick his brain there. I got a little bit off him up there and brought it down here and put in my game," Tabuai-Fidow said.
"I have enjoyed footy more playing down here. I have gone out there with a smile on my face and that's when I play my best footy."
Drinkwater said the Cowboys would have to contain Tabuai-Fidow.
"Hammer is just a tryscorer for them with his anticipation. Any line break he is quick enough to push up and support," Drinkwater said.
"He is an Origin player. It would have been really good to have him at the club but he's not. It's round 26 now so we've all moved on from that.
Tabuai-Fidow launched a new alternate strip that the Dolphins will wear on Friday night and in 2024, and wants to fire in it against his old team.
"The focus for us is just turning up for each other," he said.
"We have done that in the last five weeks and shows the trust we have in the group."
