The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index on Wednesday finished 42.9 points higher at 8,419.9, a gain of 0.5 per cent, while the broader All Ordinaries rose 50 points, or 0.58 per cent, at 8,683.4.
The ASX200 got off to a good start on Tuesday, clawing back a portion of Monday's 1.8 per cent plunge but then faded slightly into the red in late trading as President Trump's tariffs took effect on China.
The Australian dollar meanwhile was buying 62.48 US cents, up from 62.06 US cents around 5pm Tuesday.
