The event was scheduled for the NSW town of Deniliquin on Saturday, March 11 with five Aussie artists set to perform, headlined by superstar Jessica Mauboy.
The community run event attributed the cancellation to poor tickets sales and potential financial loss.
Festival's chairman Russell Tait said the board, staff and artists had done everything possible to drive ticket sales and they must be realistic and cancel at this point."
"Play on the Plains is such a great event and we've been committed to getting it off the ground, but the numbers are just not there," Mr Tait said in a statement.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to play again sometime down the track," event's General Manager Vicky Lowry said.
All ticketholders will be contacted directly and will receive a full refund.
