After a long cold, wet winter chequered with COVID-19 lockdowns, Avenel Bowls Club held its official opening day to welcome in the new GMBR season on September 19.
Last season’s club champions Grace Kenworthy and Noel Slater rolled the first jack and the first bowl for season 2021-22. There is definitely an upbeat vibe around the club as the new season was launched and friends reconnected.
Mindful of COVID-19 restrictions, the club has held practice matches, training and Sunday morning chicken run throughout October. These sessions have been well attended by existing and new members.
Last Saturday, five rinks competed in a full-scale pennant practice match along with Euroa and host Shepparton Park. A hearty thank you is extended to Shepparton Park for inviting both Avenel and Euroa and running the event which included a barbecue lunch and prizes.
Round one of the women’s and men’s club championships began last Sunday. Some close games were keenly contested with Cricket, Pam, Noel and Rob all progressing to round two this Sunday with more games to be played on Tuesday. It was very pleasing to see new bowlers enter this competition, gaining invaluable experience and match practice.
After many changes of schedule, weekend pennant starts on Saturday, November 6, and midweek pennant starts on November 9.
In weekend pennant, division three is on the road to play against East Shepparton, while division six south plays at home against Yea.
In midweek pennant, division two travels to Shepparton Golf and division five hosts Dookie.
