Our enthusiastic Gardening Club has been busy across the year weeding, cultivating and generally making our school a great environment. The kids are currently getting the school vegie patches planted up and it will be interesting to see how many of the students take home Brussels sprouts to eat! The Garden Club helps our students to demonstrate one of our school values — Respect — through their work. A number of parents support this program; however, there is always room for more volunteers!
Drumbeat
Drumbeat is much more than our students hitting drums! It is based on social emotional learning and helps to develop resilience through beat and rhythm. Our students work in small groups with a trained Drumbeat teacher to drum out feelings and discuss these. It creates a secure and safe environment for our students to grow together and have a lot of fun doing it.
Science
What is living? What is non-living? These are the questions being answered in the Junior Science Department this term. Students have explored what makes something living, such as the fact that it moves, breathes, grows and reproduces. We have then looked into knowing what living things need to survive: water, oxygen, energy and shelter. This has given our students plenty of opportunities to experiment with how energy works and makes things move, as well as the importance of water. In the senior school, some great fun was had at the start of the term looking back at the moon landing and how they managed to broadcast live from the Moon. Students have also been investigating animal environments and what they need to survive in the extreme cold and hot weather the Earth delivers. Students have experimented with different types of insulation and how it manages to keep animals warm in freezing conditions.
School Captains
Rochester Primary School takes great pride in the leadership we have developed over many years. We run four school captains each semester, giving eight students a chance to lead our school. Our current captains are: Trey White, Amy Pascoe, Lachie Joyce and Miranda Crawford. This semester our captains will be helping with the school disco, leading our Friday assemblies and providing support at the grade 6 graduation and the school’s presentation assembly at the end of the year. A critical role they play is to work with the school’s leadership group to discuss a wide range of school issues. Our students have a strong voice in their school.
School Fair
Parents, teachers and students are all working to get ready for the school’s annual Fair Day on September 12. This fair is famous for its wonderful food and is a great way to get lunch.
