The Tickford Racing star stayed the course amidst chaos at a wet Sydney Motorsport Park.
The race was shortened by five laps after three safety car periods were called, with tangles at both ends of the track largely due to the wet conditions.
An incident in the opening lap triggered an early safety car, with James Masterton, Paul Boschert and Tony Auddino getting tangled up at the starting blocks.
Front row starter Angelo Mouzouris bogged down early, sending Ryan Hill into a spin and forcing him to retire.
The race then restarted on the fifth lap, Best clearing the leader Ryan Fraser down the outside to assume the lead by the time they reached turn six.
Best stayed the course to lead the field into the final stages of the race, almost two seconds ahead of the pack when the safety car was triggered yet again on lap 12, effectively ending the action with Best getting home in first spot.
Round one was the debut of Best’s new custom livery; his No.78 Ford Falcon FG X paying tribute to Tickford Racing’s heritage with the iconic car.
Best’s Falcon is expected to be the last Ford Tickford will compete with.
The Benalla speedster heads into round two as points leader after also finishing second in his first race of the year, with the series set to resume in Perth next month.
