The AEC is reminding all voters who cannot make it to a polling place on election day to check the opening dates and times of early voting centres.
Early voting centres are not open today or Sunday.
While some will be closed tomorrow, the Edward River Council region’s early voting centre will be open.
It is located at the Deniliquin Town Hall.
It is open tomorrow from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Thursday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and next Friday from 8.30am to 6pm.
On election day next Saturday, the Town Hall will be open from 8am to 6pm.
Other election day polling places are Deniliquin Edward School, Deniliquin High School, the Deniliquin Army Cadet Unit Hall (formerly Deniliquin Scout Hall) and Blighty Public School.
You can vote early, either in person or by post, if on polling day you:
• are outside the electorate where you are enrolled to vote
• are more than 8km from a polling place
• are travelling
• are unable to leave your workplace to vote
• are seriously ill, infirm or due to give birth shortly (or caring for someone who is)
• are a person with disability (or caring for someone who is)
• are a patient in hospital and can't vote at the hospital
• have religious beliefs that prevent you from attending a polling place
• are in prison serving a sentence of less than three years or otherwise detained
• are a silent elector
• have a reasonable fear for your safety or wellbeing.
The Australian Electroal Commission recommends anyone wishing to place a postal vote should register by today.
“While the legislated deadline for postal vote applications is next Wednesday,’ April 30, anyone who leaves it until the final week risks their postal vote pack not arriving in time,’ the AEC said.
“Voters who do not receive their postal vote pack by Friday, May 2 should, if at all possible, make arrangements to vote in-person on election day.
“Voters who fail to cast a vote will be contacted by the AEC and asked to explain why they did not vote.”
To register for a postal vote, go to https://www.aec.gov.au/election/pva.htm.
