However, his dogged determination has allowed him to take his place among the greats of the game after reaching the prestigious milestone against Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in round six.
The 32-year-old was in fine form to mark the occasion, collecting 13 disposals and seven marks in a lively display down forward.
However, his trade has been in goals throughout the course of his career.
Elliott's two goals and three behinds in the Pies' 52-point demolition of the previously unbeaten Lions proved he remains a formidable threat in attack.
More impressive is that in Collingwood Football Club’s 133-year history, Elliott is just the 39th to play 200 games, although that fact had been a mystery to the man himself as he said to collingwoodfc.com.au
“I didn’t know that, that’s pretty cool,” Elliott said.
“It’s been a long road, but one that I’ll definitely be able to look back on when I’m done and I’m just grateful I can still perform at the highest level and play the game I love.”
The 2023 premiership Pie has defied his fair share of setbacks, including a vascular issue in his foot during last year’s campaign.
“There’s injuries in careers and that’s just how it goes,” Elliott said.
“I’ve had some tough ones, ones where there’s a lot of unpredictability, especially last year with my foot.
“I’ve been in good hands and had a good support network to walk me through those times.”
The milestone offered a chance for reflection for Elliott,
“My family made the trip up, a couple mates from school made it, I think a few of them drove,” he said.
“The commitment for that is special.
“It’s less about me; it’s more about celebrating those who helped me along the way – without them I would never have made it to 200.”
Now, Elliott will have his sights on Essendon on Anzac Day this Friday and, with three majors set to make him a triple century goal-scorer, could we see some more heroics from the Pies talisman yet again?
