Their season began with the annual League Cup last Sunday, where the Wanderers faced last season’s winners Swan Hill Soccer Club.
After conceding quickly in the first half to a strong Swan Hill side, the Wanderers fought back with determination, taking control of the game.
Young gun Hamish Baker opened the scoring for the Wanderers and followed with a second goal.
Leading from the front with one goal, captain Mason Brain found the back of the net taking the team into half-time with a 3-1 lead, and a clear edge over the opponents who were undefeated last year.
After a tough time defending last year, the work of Mark Plant and Ben Butcher in the first half meant Swan Hill struggled to capitalise on opportunities.
Unfortunately, early in the second half, Mark Plant went off injured, which led to two scrappy goals for Swan Hill being conceded.
In the dying moments of the game and both teams level, Swan Hill managed to score a fourth goal, resulting in a narrow defeat.
Final score: Deni Wanderers 3 lost to Swan Hill 4.
With many positives to take from the game, the Wanderers will be looking to be in contention this season.
Player’s Player went to Hamish Baker.
The Wanderers will be back in action for the start of the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League 2 Men’s Championship on Sunday, April 27.
