The 20-year-old signed a four-year deal at the Magpies in 2022 that extends until June 30, 2026, but while the young attacker struggled during loan spells in the first half of his contract, Kuol has found his feet back in the black and white stripes.
Those feet, as it turns out, have no trouble finding the goal.
Kuol ran the show as Newcastle United’s under-21s throttled Reading 7-1 in the penultimate round of Premier League Two on Monday, scoring and assisting twice in an electric exhibition of what the youngster is capable of.
Shepparton’s star boy opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a wonder strike, driving into the box, cutting onto his right foot and bending the ball delightfully into the top corner.
He then set up Newcastle’s third goal and went on to score his second with a vicious volley for the Magpies’ sixth, rounding out the performance with an assist for his side’s seventh of the match.
It couldn’t have come at a better time, either.
With one game remaining in Newcastle’s under-21 season against Manchester City on Monday, a call will have to be made by first team manager Eddie Howe and loan co-ordinator Shola Ameobi about what lies ahead for Kuol in the next 13 months.
The Goulburn Valley Suns product ranks second for goals (five) and assists (four) in Newcastle’s under-21 set up this season and is undoubtedly one of the Magpies’ finest young prospects.
A decision on whether Kuol will be loaned out or stay on Tyneside in the final year of his contract will be made after the season concludes.
But after his latest cameo the Shepparton export certainly hasn’t done himself a disservice.
Meanwhile, the club that thrust Kuol under the spotlight has achieved a red-letter moment of its own.
The Suns toppled National Premier League outfit Port Melbourne 2-0 in round four of the Australia Cup on Tuesday night, outclassing a side two tiers above at McEwen Reserve.
While the game was held to a stalemate at half-time, the Suns elicited an eruption from the stands when Mangara Munguakonkha made a mockery of the Sharks’ defence less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Munguakonkha beat the off-side trap from a long ball forward, sat down the keeper on the edge of his area and smashed the ball past the spare man on the line for 1-0.
It was a fever pitch moment, but the finishing act fittingly arrived near full-time.
With two minutes left to play, Danny Edwards ghosted his man down the line and embarked on a marauding run into the box, squaring the ball into Laywi Niyonkuru’s path who couldn’t miss from short range.
It sealed another memorable night in the Suns’ annals and Craig Carley’s side now has a chance to venture deep into the Australia Cup as it did two years ago.
The Suns’ next opponent will be the winner of Sydenham Park and Dandenong City, which will be played on April 17.
