It comes after reports of four young people gaining access to a local hotel on Saturday using what police believe are fake IDs.
Police were called to the hotel about 11.15pm after the youths presented the IDs to attempt entry.
“Police inquiries are continuing with the young persons in relation to action to be taken,” Murray River Police District Chief Inspector Michael Fuller said.
“It is timely for a reminder that it is an offence to try to enter licensed premises using a fake ID when you are underage.
“Police regularly conduct licensed premises inspections around the hotels and clubs in Deniliquin.
“There are significant penalties for staff and licensees running hotels and clubs if minors (underage) are served alcohol.”
Chief Insp Fuller said the maximum penalty that can be levied by a court is $11,000 for selling alcohol to a minor.
Another fine that could be imposed relates to the charge of minor enters or remains in a bar area of a hotel or a registered club.
The minor would be fined $2200, and the licensee would face a fine of $5500.
The charge of minors consume alcohol on licensed premises can incur a fine of $2200, and a $2200 fine also applied for any minor using a false ID.
“Police work with licensed premises, their staff and security, which is about keeping everyone safe in and around licensed venues,” Chief Insp Fuller said.
“This includes responsible service and patrons having a plan to get home safely after being out.
“The chances of being caught as a minor (underage) when you enter a licensed premises are good.
“Don’t let yourself down or make it hard for the hotels and clubs by leaving you and them open to significant penalties.
“Do the right thing, wait until you are 18 and then enjoy the great licensed venues in Deniliquin when it’s the right time.”
