Health Infrastructure Minister Melissa Horne visited the site on Wednesday, March 12 to get an update on the construction of the new three-storey accommodation complex.
The project will play a vital role in ensuring regional health services can attract and retain a workforce, with construction helping support the creation of jobs.
“We know that location can make it difficult for regional health services like GV Health to retain and attract new staff — that is why this project is critical to ensuring we can continue delivering world-class care for locals,” Ms Horne said.
Once work is completed, staff will benefit from 18 self-contained units, 15 single-room flats and three double flats, and a direct and secure connection to the hospital to improve safety for staff on call after hours.
The construction was aided by a $10.2 million grant from the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, and delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, alongside builder Hansen Yuncken.
“Regional Victorians deserve access to faster, better health care, no matter where they live, and by making it easier for health services like GV health to build a strong workforce, we can make sure that happens,” Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said.
The new staff accommodation complex comes after a recent investment by the Victorian Government into GV Health — a $229.3 million redevelopment of the hospital including a five-storey inpatient unit with 64 inpatient beds, 10 intensive care beds, four new operating theatres and a new kitchen.
Now worth $790 million, the RHIF helps to deliver projects across regional health services, funding over 675 projects so far.
“RHIF is not only making a difference to local patients and our dedicated health workforce, it also continues to support local construction jobs, both here in Shepparton and right across regional Victoria,” state Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.
