“I got into the business as, when I was purchasing my first house myself, I had a lot of trouble with it,” Sarah said.
“I just felt like people weren’t very hand-held, especially a lot of women.”
Founded not long after Sarah kicked off her career in the financial industry, Two Broker Girls formed out of a need for accessibility in the mortgage broking world.
Around two years ago, as a result of increased business, Two Broker Girls opened the doors to their pink-doored office on Tallarook St in Seymour.
The office is run by a team of dedicated women, with both Sarah and Alyce Awty assisting with all their clients’ broking needs.
“Our whole approach is being a solely women-based and women-run office,” Sarah said.
“Mortgage broking is a very male-dominated field, and it’s hard to get a start in the industry as a female.
“It was important for me to make sure that we had a safe and comfortable environment for the staff in here to flourish and have a good time at work.”
During her time working in the city in the early days of her career, Sarah found the industry to have a vast gender gap.
Sarah said that the life experience unique to women could greatly benefit the field, in increasing its accessibility to those who may not have a great awareness of the financial domain.
“It’s a very different environment, being fully female-run, I think it’s a bit more nurturing,” Sarah said.
“There’s a lot more empathy that goes around.
“We’re a lot more understanding about things that happen inside and outside of the office, where I feel like some men don’t have the responsibilities that women have outside of work.”

For women making their way into the financial industry, or for those hoping to open up their own business, Sarah’s advice is “just to start.”
“Just give it a go,” Sarah said.
“But also seek out someone who’s in the industry that you’re interested in and just go and introduce yourself, have a coffee with them, have lunch.
“You don’t have to really engage them as a full-on mentor, but it can just be someone that you can connect with and ask for help.”
