Adam Winmar, 30, now of the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, appeared in Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court.
Mr Winmar is charged with assaulting a woman and damaging her phone on September 7 last year in Collingwood.
And he is charged with strangling the same woman on October 27 last year, as well as recklessly causing injury to her and assaulting her.
He is also charged with recklessly causing injury to the same woman in Heidelberg West on January 1, as well as committing a schedule two offence while on bail on January 19 and possessing a controlled weapon on January 20.
Pleas have not been officially entered, although Mr Winmar’s defence counsel told the court there were contentious matters among the charges that had been denied by his client, including strangulation and punching.
Mr Winmar’s defence counsel asked that his client be bailed as he would be able to take part in the Court Integrated Services Program and a number of elements of it would provide a “protective factor” for bail.
He also told the court his client was a First Nations person and was willing to engage with services including the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.
The defence counsel also said Mr Winmar had “been away” from substances for about 35 days while on remand.
Magistrate John Bentley, however, refused bail, saying Mr Winmar had not completed CISP on two previous occasions and had breached every community corrections order he had previously been given.
“He’s a violent individual. The strangulation is especially concerning,” he said.
“And he’s gone straight from court (previously) to the victim’s house.
“We have a duty to protect these victims.”
Mr Winmar will next appear in Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on these matters on March 18.
