The Deniliquin RSL Club’s board and management announced this week the closure would take effect from March 1.
The decision was made for financial reasons, and after a long-running battle to recruit drivers.
While Deniliquin Taxis is not the only passenger service available to the community, concerns have been raised that it significantly affects those who have relied on the service through programs like Cabcharge cards, the Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme, fares for Department of Veterans Affairs clients and accounts of care providers.
Intereach says its community transport program provides a vital service for eligible older people, people with disability, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) clients, and those who are transport disadvantaged, helping them to get to essential appointments, shopping, and social activities.
While not a replacement for a taxi service, Intereach understands the growing need for transport options.
Intereach co-CEO Michelle Tai said the organisation was committed to supporting those who needed assistance.
“Transport is an essential factor in maintaining independence and connection to the community,” Ms Tai said.
“Our community transport program is designed to support those who are eligible and need assistance with travel.
“While we do not operate as a general public transport provider, the service offers pre-booked transport to those who qualify.
“We encourage anyone who meets the criteria and needs transport to reach out to us.”
Intereach Community Transport manager Cath Mclean said the fleet of vehicles includes wheelchair-accessible options, and a dedicated team of drivers who provide a high standard of service.
“Our goal is to ensure those in our community who need transport support can continue to access essential services,” she said.
“Residents aged 65 and over (or 50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), people with disability, DVA clients, and those who are transport disadvantaged may be eligible for our services.
“Our team is available to discuss individual needs and help determine eligibility for subsidised transport support.”
