Corey Windridge (58) and Brodie McDonald (53) scored 50s to help the top team register 7-209.
Also chipping in was Brady Mulcahy, who made 31 and skipper Sam O'Brien, who finished with 26.
Wickets were shared for United, with Chaminda Vidanapathirana (2-38) the only multiple wicket-taker.
Despite being 3-42, United bounced back, thanks to Rehan Bari (35) and captain Dwain Vidler (46), before both fell to Simon D'Elia, who picked up 3-34 off nine overs.
D'Elia took his wickets when the score was 95, 121 and 128 to turn the match in Mooroopna's favour, before some late-order hitting from Edward Adams (40 off 40) and Ethan McLaren (18 off 23) made the finish an exciting, yet unsuccessful, chase for United.
O'Brien was all praise for his opening pair.
“It was the best start we've had all year,” he said.
“In my opinion, they are the best opening partnership in the competition and I'm glad that they got the runs on the board.”
Despite only scraping over the line, O'Brien said all he was focused on for the next two matches was winning.
“As long as we keep this winning momentum going, that's all that matters,” he said.
“We got the six points and now we move on to the next one.”
Mooroopna will host Northerners next match, while United will head to Waaia.
