The draft plan was developed to identify road safety issues, explore opportunities for improvement and set priorities for future work. By seeking community feedback, council aims to shape a safer, more accessible and sustainable transport network.
The plan is open for public consultation and feedback from now until Monday, March 3, via the Shaping Greater Shepparton website.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said community input would help refine council’s strategy to ensure it met local needs by enhancing road safety for all who lived, worked and travelled in the region.
“Council’s vision is to ensure that anyone who travels throughout Greater Shepparton arrives at their destination safely,” Cr Sali said.
“Aligned with the National Road Safety Strategy and Victorian Road Safety Strategy, council’s goal is to achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries by 2050, with an interim target of halving road deaths by 2030.”
Council plans on reaching this target by using the ‘Safe System’ — focusing on safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicles and safer road users — while also promoting sustainable and active transport options.
Community consultation has already shaped parts of the draft plan, with 291 responses received in 2024 highlighting key issues, including:
• The need for road safety to be a shared responsibility.
• Poor speed compliance on 80 km/h arterial roads.
• Road surface issues such as potholes, cracking or uneven surface on arterial roads.
• A shortage of accessible parking in activity centres.
“This initial consultation helped council identify what the community prioritises in regards to road safety, mobility and accessibility within Greater Shepparton and was extremely valuable in helping shape the draft plan,” Cr Sali said.
“Road safety affects us all, so I encourage all community members to have a read of the Draft Strategy and Action Plan and provide their feedback before the closing date.”
Once community feedback is reviewed, the Draft Mobility and Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2029 will be presented for adoption at the April council meeting.
