After the story went to press, it was revealed Numurkah’s star sportsman from a few years back Mark Brown held the record with 849 runs and not Ahmet, who made his haul of 831 in the 2006-07 season Haisman Shield season.
Brown’s record-breaking season consisted of five centuries, including 136 not out and 135 in the two games against Kyabram in rounds two and 10 when the Redbacks were making their debut in Cricket Shepparton’s Haisman Shield competition.
He also scored two half-centuries and achieved his total runs feat in 12 games.
His tally consisted of 368 runs in one-day games at an average of 73.6 and 481 runs in two-day runs at an average of 80.17.
Late in the season Brown hit four centuries in five knocks.
Mueller’s 600 runs so far all came before Christmas.
He has not batted this year due to commitments with the victorious Victorian team in National Country Cricket Championships and his club having successive byes since his return.
Mueller has amassed his runs in just nine innings’ with three centuries and four half-centuries.
He now has to make 250 runs in the last two games — both two-dayers against Old Students and ladder leader Central Park St Brendan’s — to claim the record from Brown.
Wild horse chase
Apologies to any trots fans I may have sent on a wild horse chase last week.
The Kyabram Trots Club was going to stage midday trials last Thursday for the first time in 30 or more years but abandoned the idea when Cobram Trots Club announced it would stage trials the same day.
And the gremlins got into my Goulburn Murray Cricket report with the intro to my review of the January 25 John McMahon Shield games nine pars down from where it should have been.
Impressive recruiting
Seymour is the latest Goulburn Valley League club to put its hand up to make a move up the ladder this season after a disappointing 2024 season by its standards, finishing ninth.
Like Mansfield, Seymour has been on an impressive off season recruiting drive which has netted some big names such as Tom Jeffrey, who played with both Brisbane Lions reserves and Apsley Hornets in the VFL.
Jeffrey is a 186cm utility.
Also joining Seymour is Sam House, another VFL player with Greater Western Sydney reserves and also Hurstbride in the outer Melbourne Northern Football League.
He will join other new forward recruits in Cam Osmond from Lancefield and Kilmore Assumption College and Tom Gawthrop, who is a 196cm skyscraper, who can be used at either end of the ground.
Kyabram District League medallist from last year, Nagambie’s Rielly Old is also Seymour bound, along with Lachlan Beattie from Yea who is a brother of its club’s current best and fairest award-winning player Nathan.
Looby returns
Former GVL and Shepparton United star Tim Looby is back again as coach of Picola Football League side Strathmerton.
Looby co-coached Strathmertson for the past two seasons but at the end of last season former Cobram and Tocumwal coach Tim Garlick was appointed to replace him.
But Garlick had to withdraw from the position due to work commitments and Looby found himself back in the role with Zac Betson and Adrian Crestani as his assistants.
Looby kicked 124 goals last season but Strathmerton bowed out of the flag fight in straight sets in the finals.
Winning day
A new addition to the Kyabram Trots Club’s training ranks Kristy Butler landed a winner at last week’s Shepparton meeting.
Butler produced the five-year-old Hes Watching gelding Herakles to win his second race in his last three stars.
Driven by Mak Pitt, Herakles led all the way from barrier one to defeat Beta Than Love and Stazzz Destiny in 1.58. 1 mile rate time for the 2190m trip.
Butler and her husband Marc moved to Kyabram from Tasmania to train about six months ago and Erakles has been flying the flag for the stable with two wins and two seconds from five Victorian starts.
