And he’s been snapping sports for just as long.
Gus’ resounding stubbornness to the town of Kyabram is the exact reason why the community is coming together to celebrate his legacy.
On Saturday, March 1, a celebration will be held at the Wilf Cox Pavilion to honour the Kyabram Hall of Famer for his prevalent contributions in the community.
From 5.30pm, guests will enjoy an evening hosted by Ian Purdey, long-time editor of the Free Press and local legend.
A two-course meal, catered by Regans in Tongala, will be served while guests listen to guest speakers from the sporting world.
The committee doesn’t want to give many surprises away before the evening, but to give a sneak peek: four-time premiership Richmond player Dick Clay will be speaking at the evening.
John Roberts, a long-time friend of Gus, said the event was a joint effort between the many sporting club that Gus has graced over the past 80 years.
“We want Gus to be recognised by the community and him have the opportunity to come along and be acknowledged for all the great efforts he’s done,” he said.
The planning committee, aware of Gus’ contributions to the Kyabram sporting community as a whole, wanted to open the invitation, so anyone could come.
Tickets are $35 a head, with the two-course meal included and drinks available for purchase at the event.
There are only 200 spots available, with half already reserved – so get in quick to secure a place at the celebration.
