Blazes continue to cause closure of popular hike track

Bushwalkers have been turned away from one of the state's most popular trails after dry lighting sparked the blaze on Monday. The fire spread in the direction of the 65km, multi-day trail in the state's World Heritage Wilderness Area.

The extended closure is a result of challenging fire conditions which are expected to continue into next week, Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service's Nic Deka said.

"The Overland Track closure is being extended for two weeks to ensure the fire boundaries are contained and there is certainty of our ability to keep walkers safe," Mr Deka said.

State Fire Commander Matt Lowe said the Canning Peak fire has extended to 1700 hectares with a majority of that growth due to back burning.

Parks and Wildlife's Ahsley Rushton confirmed the back burning also slightly impacted part of the Overland Track's boardwalk.

"We haven't been able yet to do a full assessment as of yet. That's another part of the reason for the extended closure," he told reporters on Friday.

Meanwhile firefighters continue to respond to other fires in the state's northwest, with the three largest fires at Canning Peak, Savage River and Arthur Pieman Conservation area burning more than 20,000 hectares, Mr Lowe said.

"We are continuing to conduct containment works, including mechanical, back burning and aerial operations, and community members should continue to expect to see smoke in the air," he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Luke Johnston said weather conditions in Tasmania look to settle through the weekend and into the start of next week, with the mercury and winds not likely to be high.

"There's possibly going to be some isolated light shower activity about the northwest near the fires over the coming days, but nothing significant, nothing that's going to really make a difference," he said.

The trail is planned to reopen on February 24 and full refunds will be provided to anyone booked on the track while it remains closed.
